Considerations
We have outlined some specific questions below designed to help you assess the best methods to apply and provide discussion points for a Tourplan representative to help guide you through the decision process.
-
How do you currently apply your Markup (or Discount)/Commissions?
-
Do you sell to agents/wholesalers or directly to the public? If you sell directly to the public you will have a slightly simplified setup. You will still need to select a markup method that works for you, however you may choose to markup within your product.
-
How do you obtain your rates from your supplier? Nett or Gross?
-
Nett (plus)+ a markup/margin you set, or
-
Gross (minus) – your commission if you receive your rates in Gross, Tourplan will allow a Rack rate to be entered such as the example below – this reverses the pricing to a Rack rate (minus) - the commission. This is not a system-wide setting and can be controlled product-by-product if necessary.
-
-
Is a different cost price for the same product obtained for different markets? If the cost price (for the same product) is different for different nationalities or markets you must use price codes to enter the various cost prices. You are then able to choose how you want to markup those costs from any of the markup strategies available.
-
Is the product sold using a room rate + selectable extras (such as breakfast)? If product extras require different markup or commission treatment to the costing of the product’s main option, then you will need to use the Price Code method. The DCM record applies markup across the whole option (for example - the main option and all 5 extras) with no way to differentiate between Main option and extras.
General Principles
To assist you in your markup strategy we suggest following these general principles:
-
Simplify and group pricing structures as much as possible
-
Minimise pricing strategy variations
-
Minimise the variables affecting possible pricing variations
-
Minimise the analysis codes involved in triggering rules
-
Use the DCM wherever practical
-
Ensure you are proficient in using Rate Maintenance where you do need multiple price codes to achieve the required pricing structure.
